Poul Henningsen designed the three-screen light system in 1925-1926. Along with Louis Poulsen, PH designed the first light bulbs to use this system for an exhibition in Paris. Collaboration between the two continued until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, he sought to create direct lighting and no glare in the places where light was most needed. In addition, he used incandescent light bulbs as a light source to create soft shadows. The PH 31⁄2-21 Pie light is part of the three-screen family, which already has 30 lights, currently included for outdoor use. Thus, PH did not design a whole lighting system; over the course of three decades, a number of models have been created.
